Introducing JM Beltran

JM Beltran is a Wellington-based landscape and nature photographer whose work captures the wild beauty of Aotearoa in colour and detail. His photography has been recognised internationally, as a finalist in the Australian Photographer of the Year 2024, The Landscape Awards 2025, and Australasia’s Top Emerging Photographer 2024, along with a Silver Award at the NZIPP NZAPA 2024.

Beyond recognition, JM is deeply connected to the landscapes and wildlife he photographs. He volunteers at Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne as a Night Guide Assistant and Visitor Experience volunteer, roles that strengthen his bond with nature and conservation. His work has been shown in multiple exhibitions: Fiesta of Colours – Aotearoa, Life and Colour, Seeking Colours After Dark, and Colour of the Wild, with his Wild Pōneke collection currently on display at the Tākina retail store during the World Press Photo Exhibition.

JM joined us at the 2025 New Zealand Photography Show for the first time. We asked his thoughts on the event.

Before attending the NZ Photo Show, what were your expectations, and how did the reality compare?
I didn’t really have expectations since it was my first photography-focused event spanning multiple days. It went beyond what I imagined, it’s huge, yet the atmosphere is warm and familiar, with attendees all seeming to know each other.

When you first arrived, what stood out most about the atmosphere and the event itself?
How welcoming and engaging everyone was. You could easily chat with the incredible speakers as well as fellow attendees.

Was there a presentation, workshop, or live demo that really stuck with you, and why?
The deep sky astrophotography workshop stood out, I loved how photography can make us feel differently on such a massive scale. I also enjoyed the Landscape session on preparing and planning for shoots in specific conditions.

Did you come away with a new skill, idea or inspiration that you’re excited to apply to your own photography or business?
Definitely. I picked up new apps for planning, plus ideas to incorporate into my style. Talking with fellow attendees also expanded what I already knew.

How did it feel to be part of the community at the show? Did you make any memorable connections?
I made lots of new connections, both online and offline. It’s great to know those relationships can continue beyond the event and we can support each other.

What was your impression of seeing the Iris Awards print gallery in person?
The quality of the work and the effort behind it really impressed me. Meeting the photographers and hearing their thoughts added a whole new dimension to the images, it brought the photos to life.

If you had to describe your experience at the NZ Photo Show in three words, what would they be?
Connect. Learn. Create.

What is your biggest takeaway from the event?
That New Zealand (and Australia) has such a vibrant, supportive photography community, where people genuinely want to help each other succeed.

Would you attend again in the future? If so, what would you do differently, or like to see next time?
Yes! Next time I’d love to join the Iris Awards, especially the live judging sessions, to learn more from the process.

Finally, what advice would you give to someone thinking about coming to the NZ Photo Show for the first time?
Just come! It’s absolutely worth it. And if you’re patient, keep an eye out for discounted tickets too, haha.
