9.15am – 10.15am: Creating Light using Strobist Techniques, with Richard Linton
Richard has been experimenting with, and using Strobist-like techniques ever since being an early adopter of digital capture last century. Being able to instantly review your images permits refinement of lighting to get just the image you are looking for.
Strobist techniques allow you to use small battery powered flash units and lightweight accessories to get sophisticated results quickly. The gear can be relatively inexpensive, it’s portable, flexible, very quick to set-up and promotes experimentation with your photography.
Following the session, with the use of off-camera flash and the lighting techniques discussed your photos will take off to the next level.
Who should attend?
* commercial, portrait and wedding photographers – the techniques discussed are applicable to all types of photography
* photographers who are sick of the harsh, flat look of on camera flash
* photographers that often work alone without assistants and don’t have limited ability to carry and set-up large amounts of lighting
* photographers wishing to differentiate their style in their work
* photographers who have studio flash but wish to have more options and flexibility when on location
This session will look at the equipment that you need to get started and how your system can evolve to over time. This will include:
- flash unit selection
- support systems
- methods of triggering flashes
- light modifiers
- dealing with ambient light and using it to your advantage
Following this there will be a live shoot using this equipment combined with Strobist techniques allowing multiple set-ups in a matter of minutes. During the shoot images will be played back live so you can see the results as they evolve shot to shot.
10.15am – 10.30am: Morning tea
10.30am – 11.30am: Self Publishing and Food Photography with Joanna Piatek
Joanna is a photographer and a journalist with the ability to tell a visual story. Her recent book Kapiti – A Portrait through Food is a photographic journey from Paekakariki to Otaki in Kāpiti, New Zealand, where we visit local foodies who tell their story and share a recipe.
In this session, Joanna will talk about powerful and engaging story telling through food photography, the process of self publishing and creating and building a profitable business brand whilst connecting kiwi communities.
11.30am – 1.00pm Architectural Photography with Nick Servian
Nick has been a professional photographer since a mac was a raincoat and a photoshop was a place to buy film. He’s worked with top-end advertising agencies and designers for literally hundreds of ads and company reports. His assignments have taken him to over 30 countries. From Adelaide to Zurich, Tokyo to Timaru, Washington to Wagga Wagga, he’s been there, and his work has been exhibited and published everywhere. Nick spent the first 12 years of his professional career with a black cloth over his head, photographing the cathedrals and stately homes of England, (as well as the countryside, towns and villages.) In this session, Nick will discuss the techniques for shooting buildings, especially lighting and timing. But mainly it’s about correcting the verticals – in-camera and on the computer.
1.00pm – 1.30pm: Lunch break. Bring your own lunch or find something to purchase at the Founders Cafe.
1.30pm – 2.30pm – Mapping your business for success – the simple way to understand and manage the numbers in your business with Kim Hamblin
In this session you’ll learn how to price yourself for profit, you’ll learn the four metrics to measure in business to move towards your dreams, and you’ll learn one super-simple trick to keep you on track that takes just a few minutes each week! If you’d love to simplify the ‘business’ part of your business, then this is the session for you!
2.30pm – 3.30pm Making the most of sub-optimal situations with Catherine Cattanach
As much as we all love shooting in gorgeous locations with relaxed clients, beautiful light and plenty of time to create, the reality is that many times as photographers we actually just have to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. In this presentation, Catherine Cattanach will share a few tricks for getting decent portraits in sub-optimal situations. If time permits, we will hold a group discussion afterwards where we can all share similar tips we’ve learned.
3.30pm – 3.45pm Afternoon Tea
3.45pm – 4.30pm – Business Workflow Q&A
We all have different methods for running our business – from bookings to session and editing workflow, we’ll discuss how each of our presenters run their own business to streamline their processes.
